What is an Au Pair?

Au Pair means “in exchange”. The Au Pair stays with a host family in a foreign country primarily to learn the language and to gain knowledge about customs and culture. In exchange for being able to stay with the family, the au pair helps with the children and will also do light housework.   They are not fully trained childminders, however an au pair does have babysitting experience.

An au pair would like to be treated as a member of your family. The au pair is not a maid and does not want to be treated as an employee.  They should receive feedback, talk to her, explain things and treat her well. An au pair should join the family during meals. All meals should be provided Mondays to Sundays. An au pair should have her own room with a small desk and chair.
